Murray State got a pair of three-run innings and a great outing from its bullpen as the Racers defeated Southern Illinois, 7-3 Wednesday evening at Reagan Field.
The Racers' (15-17) relievers combined to pitch four scoreless innings and gave up just two hits and struck-out six batters in the win. Austin Dubsky was solid in his start for MSU, going five innings and giving up three earned runs and striking out a career-high six batters to improve his record to 3-3 on the season.
Offensively, Kipp Moore delivered most of the damage for MSU on the night as he went 2-for-4 with a run and had a pair of extra-base, two-RBI hits in the win. Ramsey Scott also went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and collected a pair of RBIs. Caleb Hicks and Tyler Lawrence also had two-hit games on the evening.
MSU scored the first three runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Moore's double to straightaway center field brought home Hicks and Scott to put the Racers up 2-0. Nick Moore would follow that up with a single to right, scoring Kipp and making it 3-0.
The Salukis (18-11-1) would claw their way back, cutting the Racer lead to 3-1 with a run in the third and eventually tying the game at 3-3 with a two-run fourth inning. Murray State would soon respond however with its second three-run inning, this time in the fifth. Scott's single to left scored Bauer for the eventual game-winning run and two batters later Moore would hit a triple to right center to bring in both Hicks and Scott. Scott's second RBI of the night came in the sixth as he doubled to the gap, scoring Lawrence and posting MSU to a 7-3 lead.
In all, MSU used five relievers to shut the door on the Salukis. Cody Maerz led the way by striking out the side in the eighth inning. The Racers out-hit SIU 10-7 and had three extra-base hits to the Salukis' one.
MSU returns to conference play this weekend as it travels to Jacksonville, Ala., for a three-game set with Jacksonville State. The series kicks off Friday with a 6 p.m., first pitch.
