Defensive Miscues Cost Racers in Series Opener

Murray State committed four errors which led to six unearned Jacksonville State runs as the Racers fell in the series opener to JSU, 11-4 Friday night in Jacksonville, Ala.
The Gamecocks (20-9, 10-0 OVC) were able to score three runs in the bottom of the second, all of which were unearned, and four in the fifth, three of which came unearned.
Trailing 5-0 in the fifth, the Racers (15-18, 5-8 OVC) were able to cut the deficit to 5-4 with a four-run top of the fifth. All four of MSU's runs came with two outs in the inning. An Adam Bauer single to left brought home Tyler Dixon to put the Racers on the board for the first time in the loss. In the very next at-bat, a Tyler Lawrence double down the left field line made it 5-2 as Bauer came around to score. Next, Ramsey Scott's two-run double to deep right center field made it 5-4, Scott was thrown out at third base on the play.
JSU was able to respond however in the bottom half of the inning, thanks in large part to a pair of MSU errors, as the Gamecocks went back up 9-4. The Gamecocks were also able to add a run in both the seventh and eighth innings.
Bauer, Dixon and Lawrence led the way offensively for the Racers with two hits each in the loss. Jack Hranec was 1-for-3 at the plate on the night and got the loss in the start on the mound for MSU. Hranec went three innings and allowed six hits, five runs, two of which were earned as his record falls to 3-3 on the year.
JSU out-hit the Racers 12-11 in the contest with six of MSU's hits coming with two outs. The Racers were 3-for-6 on the night with runners in scoring position while the Gamecocks went 3-for-16 in such at-bats. Brad Boegel, Andrew Bramley and Brandon Hicks all made relief appearances for MSU.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 1 p.m., at Abbott Field.
