Racers Fall in Slugfest
5/6/2016 10:09:00 PM | Baseball
The Bruins (27-19, 13-9 OVC) collected 17 hits and hit three home runs in the slugfest as the Racers had 10 base knocks and went deep twice. Belmont also left 14 runners stranded on base while MSU (22-25, 10-12) left 10 men on.
MSU got off to a fast start as Kipp Moore belted a leadoff home run to open the game, his second dinger of the season. Tyler Lawrence would later score on a wild pitch in the first to put the Racers up 2-0. Moore collected his second and third RBIs of the game in the bottom of the second when his double down the third base line scored two and pushed the Racer lead to 4-0. Moore went 3-for-6 with four RBIs, two doubles and the one long ball in the loss.
After BU cut the deficit to 4-2 with a pair of runs in the third, MSU struggled to get the offense going as well in the middle innings and eventually a four-run top of the sixth put the Bruins out front 6-4. However, the Racers would reclaim the lead with a three-run bottom half of the inning to go back up 7-6. An Adam Bauer two-RBI single up the middle and an RBI groundout from Lawrence did the damage in the frame.
Both teams would score in all three of the final innings, but a five-run seventh from the Bruins did the most damage to give them an 11-7 edge. Caleb Hicks would score on an error in the seventh to make it 11-8 while Ramsey Scott's 12th homer of the season in the eighth made it a three-run game at 12-9. Moore's fourth ribbie and second double in the ninth was the final run in the game for the Racers.
Scott was the only other Racer with multiple hits in the loss as he went 2-for-4 at the plate. Tyler Dixon went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a pair of walks while Aaron Bence was 1-of-3 with three walks and scored three times for MSU.
Ryan Dills pitched 5.1 innings and got the no decision on the night for MSU. Dills tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts and allowed three earned runs on six hits in the outing. Cody Maerz took the loss in relief for the Racers as he allowed five runs off five hits in an inning of work.
Game two of the series is Saturday at Reagan Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
