Defense and Pitching Leads to Series-Evening Win

Great pitching and solid defense helped propel Murray State to a 4-1 victory Saturday night at Reagan Field over Belmont as the Racers evened the series with the Bruins with the win. Austin Dubsky and Andrew Bramley combined to allow just one run on eight hits in the win.

Dubsky pitched a career-high seven innings and struck-out a career-best seven batters in the win while walking just one and scattering seven hits. Dubsky improves his record to 5-3 in the win. Bramley came on and pitched a solid eighth and ninth to record his second save of the season. Bramley tallied four strikeouts on the night and allowed one hit, walked one and hit a pair of batters.

Three Racers recorded multiple hits in the win as Tyler Lawrence led MSU (23-25, 11-12 OVC) with a 3-for-4 performance to go along with a run and an RBI. Adam Bauer went 2-for-4 with a ribbie and a run scored in the win and Aaron Bence was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Ramsey Scott went 1-for-3 at the dish and had two RBIs.

MSU jumped out to an early lead Saturday, much like in game one with a run in the first inning on a Bauer single to left field. In the third, Scott's sacrifice fly to right brought home Lawrence from third and extended the Racer lead to 2-0. After Belmont's (27-20, 13-10 OVC) lone run in the fifth made it 2-1, a Lawrence RBI single up the middle pushed the MSU lead back to 3-1. Scott's bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth gave the Racers a little more insurance as it pushed the advantage to 4-1.

Both teams got men on base but struggled to bring them home as the Racers stranded 13 on the base paths and Belmont left nine on. The Racers were also able to pick-off three Bruin baserunners in the contest, in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to kill any BU momentum.

Saturday's win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Racers. The rubber match of the series is Sunday at Reagan Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
