Racers Perform Well At Home & St. Louis

The Murray State women's track and field squad held their home event of the spring when the Margaret Simmons Invitational was held at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, Ky.

The event honored Murray State Hall of Famer Coach Margaret Simmons who started the women's track and field program at MSU in the late 1960's.
Â
The Racers also sent a small contingent of distance runners to St. Louis where they competed at the Washington University Invitational.

Here is a breakdown of the top performances of the day for the Racers.
Â
Sprints
Tamdra Lawrence placed first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.15, ahead of teammate Daijah White at 12.65.

Anna Curlin was first in the 200 meter run with a time of 26.09.
Â
Middle Distance
In the 400 Meter Dash, MSU's Norman Abdur-Rafia was the winner with a time of 56.59 and set her personal record as well. Hilary McAdam was second at 57.93.

Tia Weston won the 800 meter run at 2:22, while Aubrey Main was second at 2:30.

Ida Mutai was second in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:05.

Jocelyn Payne won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:04, ahead of Taylor Adcock at 1:08.

Distance
At the Washington University event, the Racers competed at Francis Field in St. Louis, Missouri.

MSU's Ali Hester was fifth in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:18 and put her name third on the all-time best list with the Racers. Her time was behind only Vallery Korir's 16:59 from 2015 and Katelyn Jones' 16:57 from 2009. Mason Swenson placed 29th with a time of 18:04 and Rebekah Priddy was 36th at 18:22.

In the 10,000 meter run, Meagan Smith placed sixth with a time that is third all-time at MSU at 36:37. Only Korir (34:27 in 2016) and Teresa Colby (36:30 in 1985) had better times. Emily Flaherty placed 16th at 37:46 and is eighth on the MSU all-time list.

Field Events
Hope Tewes won the high jump with a leap of 1.58 meters, ahead of Aubrey Main at 1.55.

Chleo LeGrand won the pole vault with an effort of 3.25 meters.

In the long jump, Taylor McCammon set the meet record with a jump of 5.56 meters. Austin Peay's Chancis Jones set the previous mark of 5.76 in 2014. MSU's Jabreuna Brimlett was second at 5.41, Yasmine Homa was third at 4.92.

Hope Tewes won the triple jump with an effort of 10.03 meters.

Jewel Wagner was tops in the shot put at 13.06 meters, while Destiny Carey was second at 11.44. Wagner was also fourth in the hammer throw at 42.50 meters. In the discus throw, Carey was the winner at 34.68 meters.

Kristen Higgins was second in the javelin throw at 28.60 meters.

Relays
The Racers' 4x400 meter relay team ran a 3:55 which is second all-time at MSU and it also set the Simmons Invitational record that was set by the Racers in 2013. MSU's second team also broke the meet record and posted a time that is third best at MSU at 3:56.

The Racers hit the road for their next event (April 7-8) when they compete at the Western Kentucky Relays in Bowling Green, Ky.
