Racers Start OVC Play 2-0 With Close Win Against Tennessee State
3/17/2018 5:25:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The Murray State women's tennis team came away with a hard fought win against the Tennessee State Tigers, as they won 4-3 at the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts in Murray, Ky.
The Racers move to 6-6 overall and 2-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference while Tennessee State moves to 10-4 overall and 0-2 in the OVC.
"Today was a very tough day to play tennis in with over 20mph wind, it wasn't pretty but I am happy we got the job done. Tennessee State keeps on improving year after year and they really challenged us today," said head coach Jorge Caetano. "The highlight of the day was our doubles play which is something we have been working on a lot. It's great to start conference play 2-0, but we know this is just the beginning, and we are looking forward to the rest of the season."
Murray State picked up their first point in doubles play, as Claire Chang and Jeanne Masson won 6-0 while Sara Bjork and Stasya Sharapova won 6-4.
The Tigers would come on strong in singles play, winning three matches to make it close.
Chang made it a 2-0 match with an easy win in two sets, winning 6-1 and 6-0.
Chakraborty won her second straight match this weekend, as she won in two sets 6-0 and 6-1.
Amina Hadzic won her seventh straight match in three sets, as she dropped the first set 6-2 before rallying to win the next two 6-0 and 6-2.
Murray State goes on the road to finish their non-conference portion of the schedule against two Missouri Valley teams, with Bradley University on Tuesday, March 20 and Illinois State on Wednesday, March 21.
