Tuesday
The Murray State volleyball team will clash with the defending OVC champion Austin Peay Governors, Tuesday night, in the first Battle of the Border event of the year. The two teams were picked 1-2 in the OVC preseason poll with the Racers taking the top spot. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Last Weekend
Murray State opened OVC play with two road matches over the weekend, falling in five sets to both UT Martin and Southeast Missouri. The Skyhawks won the first, third, and fifth set to take the match, Friday while the Racers had to come back from two sets down against SEMO, but ultimately fell in the fifth set. Rachel Giustino had a double-double in both matches, while Ashley McBee had 80 assists, including a career-high 50 against the Redhawks. Kolby McClelland and Katirah Johnson had 11 and 10 blocks, respectively, and Becca Fernandez had 43 total digs.
Conference Leaders
Murray State currently has the top two kills leaders in the OVC. Junior Rachel Giustino averages 4.08 kills per set, the only player in the OVC to be above four, while senior Dacia Brown is second in the conference, averaging 3.56.
Scouting Austin Peay
The defending OVC champs got off to a 2-0 start over the weekend, sweeping Southeast Missouri before downing UT Martin in four sets. Cecily Gable had 28 total kills and hit. 235 while Kristen Stucker dished out 78 assists for an average of 11.14 per set. Ginny Gehrig paced the Govs on defense with 6.14 digs per set for a total of 43 in the two matches. The Govs are ranked ninth in the nation in both kills per set (14.46) and assists per set (13.60). Austin Peay was picked second in the preseason OVC poll, behind the Racers.
