Last Time Out:
Murray State defeated Eastern Illinois 1-0 in their final regular season contest of the season back on October 27th, after a 28th minute goal from Abby Jones kept the Racers perfect at home against OVC opponents in 2019. The Racers outshot the Panthers 26-6 (11-2 on target) on the afternoon, while red-shirt freshman goalkeeper Jamie Skarupsky recorded a pair of saves to preserve her second career clean sheet in the victory.
Entering the Weekend:
The Racers enter Friday's semifinal riding a three-game winning streak after they earned victories against Austin Peay, Belmont, and Eastern Illinois - outscoring the three opponents 6-1 to close the regular season schedule.
The Murray State offense is putting together one of the best seasons in team history, having scored a program-record 27 goals against OVC opponents in 2019. Additionally, their 2.39 goals per game through all competitions is tied for 15th in the nation, while their 43 total goals is good for 18th in the country.
Individually, the Racers are led by senior Miyah Watford, who has recorded 14 goals and counting on the year as she currently leads the OVC and is tied for 12th in the nation in scoring. Her dazzling offensive displays have produced 33 total points (14 goals, and five assists) as she now holds the Murray State single-season records in both goals and points.
Sophomore Abby Jones has chipped in 22 points of her own, collecting six goals and an OVC-leading 10 assists that is tied for 15th in the country, while the Powell, Ohio native has already tied the MSU single-season assists record set by Jones herself in her freshman season a year ago.
Scouting Belmont:
Belmont also enters Friday's match as winners of three straight, as the sixth-seeded Bruins find themselves in this year's OVC semifinals courtesy of a 1-0 first-round victory over Austin Peay, followed by a 2-0 upset of third-seeded UT Martin in the quarterfinals. After opening their 2019 OVC campaign with three consecutive losses, the Bruins found their rhythm in crunch time, losing just one (the 3-0 contest against Murray State) of their final seven matches to conclude the regular season.
The Belmont offense has averaged 1.16 goals per game in 2019, and is led by 2018 All-OVC 1st team selection Julie Garst, who has registered 17 points on a team-high seven goals and three assists on the year. On the other side of the ball, senior goalkeeper Lily Herman has played all 19 games between the posts to anchor a defense that is allowing 1.31 goals per game.
All-Time Series:
After Murray State's 3-0 victory over Belmont in this year's regular season encounter on the road in Nashville, Tennessee, the Racers now hold the all-time series against the Bruins with a 6-5 record through 11 competitions. Additionally, Murray State has emerged victorious in the last five meetings between the two sides, outscoring Belmont 10-1 in those aforementioned contests.
Weather Forecast:
A partly-cloudy high of 41 degrees is expected in Cape Girardeau, Missouri for kickoff on Friday, with winds blowing to the north/northeast at around eight miles per hour. Chance of rain: 0%
