Racers Return to Friendly Confines of The Bank
The Murray State Racers (5-4) are back at home this week for their first back-to-back games at the CFSB Center in the 2022-23 season. The Racers host the Chicago State Cougars Tuesday in a 7 p.m. tip at The Bank, after the Murray State women's team hosts Austin Peay in the first game at 5 p.m.
The Racers have won their last 18 games on their home court since their last loss to Eastern Illinois (Feb. 18, 2021. The current run at home is among the top-15 home win streaks in MSU history. The most famous home win streak in MSU history was the 47 in a row MSU won between 1996-2000 that spanned the final 30 games at old Racer Arena and the first 17 at the CFSB Center. It was the nation's longest streak when it was halted by Southeast Missouri State.
The Process of Building a Team
With 12 new team members among the 2022-23 team, Coach Steve Prohm and staff had to move fast in signing new players last spring and then molding them into a great team. In the first nine games, the Racers have experienced the high of defeating Texas A&M at the Myrtle Beach Invitational, which is still the Missouri Valley Conference's only win so far over a ranked team this season, and starting The Valley season 2-0 with a home win over Illinois State and a road victory at Valparaiso. Along the way, the Racers have been humbled, as they were at Bellarmine Saturday 69-58 and also at Chattanooga. Now the Racers come home this week to be challenged on their home court by Chicago State and then Austin Peay Friday. Next week (Dec. 21) the Racers play their final non-conference game at Middle Tennessee before hosting Southern Illinois (Dec. 29) in a return to MVC play.
Chicago State Rematch Recalls Memories of Cuffy
The Racers and Chicago State have only met one other time. That was also a home game in the CFSB Center in 2003. The Racers won the game 100-80. Senior forward Cuthbert Victor made his case as one top players in the nation by scoring a career-high 35 points. Victor, a native of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, was an amazing 13-of-16 from the field while pulling down eight rebounds to go with five blocked shots and three steals in 29 minutes of action. "Cuffy" was the 2004 OVC Player of the Year and earned All-America honors.
