Murray State took game one of their three-game series with the Panthers on a walk-off single from Carson Garner

Murray State baseball took game one of their series 3-2 on a walk-off RBI-single from Carson Garner on Friday afternoon at Johnny Reagan Field. Garner and starting pitcher Jacob Pennington highlighted the Racers game one win before dropping a tightly contested 3-2 contest in game two of the doubleheader.

Garner collected two hits and two RBIs in the matchup with a triple on top of the walk-off knock. Garner leads MSU with 13 RBIs on the season to go with two doubles, two triples, and two home runs. Cade Brown provided a key RBI-double following Garner's triple to plate the Racers second run of the matchup.

Pennington nearly put together the first no-hitter for Murray State since 2013, coming within one out of the accomplishment. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee native struck out five across 8.0 innings pitched while surrendering just two walks and two runs. Opponents now have a .138 batting average when facing Pennington who lowered his ERA to 3.24 across 25 innings pitched.

The MSU bats collected six more hits in the second matchup of the twin-bill with second baseman Logan Bland earning two hits to lead the way. Taylor Howell took the team-lead in home runs this season with his third round-tripper of the year on a solo blast in the third inning. Cade Sammons, Brennan McCullough and Ethan Krizen rounded out the offensive output for MSU on the day.

The Racers pitching staff impressed once again between Cade Vernon and Nathan Holler. Vernon earned the start on the hill for MSU and went for 5.1 innings pitched while allowing just three earned runs and striking out two. Holler tossed 1.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout in relief for Murray State.

The Racers and Panthers square off for the rubber match tomorrow at Johnny Reagan Field with a start time scheduled for 12 p.m.
