The Murray State women's golf team is ready to compete in their second Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
Â
Annbriar Golf Club in Waterloo, Illinois is the site of the 54-hole event that is played Sunday through Monday (April 14-15). The altered schedule of play calls for 18 holes Sunday morning in an 8:30 a.m. shot gun start. The second round will be at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Monday's final round will begin at 8 a.m.Â
Â
The Racers enter the Valley bash ranked No. 193 in NCAA DI and are the 6th ranked team in the conference (same as the preseason poll) behind Illinois State (138), Bradley (160), UIC (165), Missouri State (176) and Belmont (179). A year ago, the Racers placed fourth at 953 and a stroke from second place Evansville and Belmont. Missouri State won with a total of 943 and a 10-shot advantage over the Racers.
Â
The Racers have reason to make another run at the title in 2023 with Payton Carter, the reigning MVC Player of the Year, is coming off making it to a playoff a year ago after she carded scores of 79-72-80=231 at Annbriar. Eliza Mae Kho also played in the MVC event a year ago and placed 30th. The rest of MSU's starting five, Ella Scherer, Patti Patterson and Emily Shimkus, are playing Annbriar for the first time.
Â
Annbriar Golf Course opened in 1993 and was named the No. 3 course in the Prairie State in 2021. It has also hosted events on the Korn Ferry Tour from 2018-21. From 2012-17, Annbriar was named the No. 35 course in the USA by Golf Advisor.
Â
The MVC had its first women's golf championship in 1983, which makes the 2024 staging of the event the 41st competition for The Valley's top prize. There wasn't a championship played in 2020. The Redbirds have won an MVC best 14 team titles and have produced 13 individual champions.
