Lewis Leads Racers In Opening Round of Peoples Championship

The Murray State Racers men's golf team had a spot in 13th place in a field of 20 teams after the first round of the Peoples Golf Championship at Sea Palms Resort in St. Simons Island, Georgia.

The Racers gave up some shots in the final five holes, but still managed a 5-over-par 289 and were chasing Xavier (288), Long Island, Marshall and Francis Marion, all at 287.

Murray State's Trey Lewis carded a 1-under-par 70 and had a spot in 18^th place in the field of 119 competitors.

UNC Greensboro was the leader after an event record of 268, led by a record low round of 63 by UNCG's Jake Lewis.

Round two is set for Friday morning.

The course at Sea Palms is an original design by George Cobb and opened in 1967. Cobb, played collegiately at the University of Georgia in the late 1930's. He designed the par-3 course at Augusta National as well as well known courses, East Lake and Quail Hollow. Cobb passed away in 1986.
