Murray State honored seniors Maggie Smith & Paola Campigotto as they eye back-to-back MVC titles
Murray State women's tennis moved closer to clinching their second-consecutive Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship with a 5-2 win over the Belmont Bruins at Bennie Purcell Courts in Murray, Kentucky.
Now at 5-0, the Racers have won 15-straight MVC games in the last two seasons and are in a position to clinch one of the top-2 seeds in the coming MVC Tournament on Sunday if they can win at Missouri State in Springfield.
On Senior Day when senior Paola Campigotto (Joinville, Brazil) and Maggie Smith (Paducah, Ky.) were honored, the Racers won for a ninth-straight time this season.
MSU's dynamic duo of Alexeyeva/Campigotto scored a 6-1 victory in under 25min to put the Racers in front in doubles. MSU's pair of Chaikovskaia/Melato won the last two games for a 6-4 victory and continue their undefeated MVC season at 5-0.
In singles, the Racers earned three points to clinch the match win. Campigotto won 6-2, 6-2, as did Alexeyeva who won 6-1, 6-1 and Yuna Kadowaki clinched the win for the Racers for the first time in her career with a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
"First, this was a very special day for our seniors Maggie and Paola," MSU Coach Jorge Caetano said. "Maggie has always been the ultimate teammate and I am very happy she chose to be part of our program and it has been a pleasure to coach her these four years. Paola has been fantastic and we couldn't have asked for a better leader to lead such a young team we have this year. She has grown so much both on and off the court and she has set the example for the younger players that will hopefully last for a long time. As for today's match, this was a big rivalry meeting and our team took care of business today. It was very challenging going back outdoors after four-consecutive indoor matches, but we did a great job with the things we can control and found a way to compete for every point. Belmont is always tough to beat and I am sure we will face them again in the MVC Tournament."
