Murray State Defeats Evansville 4-3
The Murray State Racers (20-23, 10-12 MVC) defeated the Evansville Purple Aces (18-28, 4-18 MVC) 4-3 to complete a weekend sweep on Saturday afternoon in Murray, Ky.
On the afternoon, the Racers scored four runs on seven hits and committed no errors. Evansville scored three runs on six hits and committed two errors. Â
The Aces jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as lead-off hitter Taylor Howe tripled and scored on a wild pitch to open the game. Niki Bode scored the next two on an RBI single that scored Miriah Powell and Zoe Frossard, giving the Aces a commanding 3-0 lead in the second inning. Â
The Navy & Gold began to chip away in the fourth inning. Parker Holcombe slid home on a sacrifice bunt from Ailey Schyck to break through for Murray State and make it 3-1 going into the fifth. Bailey Broemmer added one more on a sacrifice fly from Katy Huels, leaving the bases empty for Kenley Minor. Minor took the first pitch before hitting a towering home run down the right field line to tie the game with her first career homer. Â
With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Hannah Sutton got on base with a single to left before Courtney Sandy was brought in to pinch run. After initially being called out, Sandy was ruled safe at third base on another sacrifice bunt from Ailey Schyck. The sophomore flew home on the next play, scoring on a wild pitch to give the Racers a 4-3 lead. Â
Needing two outs to end the game, relief pitcher Raylee Roby appeared to be in trouble with runners on second and third. The sophomore was not bothered as she was able to draw a pair of pop-ups to end the game, including one she fielded herself.
Kayleigh White and Bailey Broemmer led the Racers at the plate as both went 2-3 and Broemmer scored a run. Hannah Sutton, Parker Holcombe, and Kenley Minor added one hit apiece as Minor's was her first career homer. Katy Huels did not record a hit, ending her hitting streak at 17 games, the second longest in program history. Ailey Schyck added an RBI and a pair of sacrifice bunts, and Huels and Minor each added one as well.Â
Raylee Roby (5-3) got her second win of the weekend, allowing no earned runs on four hits and striking out one. Bre Haislip was the starting pitcher and gave up three earned runs on two hits.
Kate Ridgeway (5-11) was the losing pitcher, going one and one-third of an inning in relief and allowing one earned run. Taylor Howe went 2-4 to lead the Aces at the plate, and Niki Bode added two RBI. Â
The Racers will hit the Road next weekend to take on Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill. The series will kick off at 5 p.m. CT on Friday, April 25, and continue at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday and 12:00 p.m. CT on Sunday. Â
