CARBONDALE, Ill. — Luke Mistone drove in five runs to tie a career high, and the Murray State offense erupted for 13 runs to defeat Ohio 13-4 in the Racers' season opener.
Murray State (1-0) recorded a dominant offensive performance with six players recording multi-hit games. Mistone, Parker Airhart, and Kainen Jorge led the charge with three hits apiece, while Daylan Pena, Anthony Perritano, and Sloan Barrett each added two hits.
The Racers' power came in the form of three doubles, two from Perritano and one from Mistone.
On the mound, Nic Schutte earned the win, striking out four and allowing four hits over four innings of work. The bullpen quartet of Jack Wajda, Ben Rosin, Parker Patterson, and Jacob Roettgen combined to lock down the victory, allowing Ohio (0-1) just one earned run over the final five innings.
How It Happened
The Racers took control early, scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Pena that brought Connor Chisolm home. They extended the lead to 3-0 in the second inning, capitalizing on command issues by Ohio. After loading the bases, Chisolm drew a walk to score Airhart, followed by RBI fielder's choices from Mistone and Conner Cunningham.
Ohio narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the third with back-to-back RBI singles, but Murray State answered immediately. In the bottom of the fourth, Mistone doubled and scored, and Pena added an RBI single to push the lead to 5-2.
After the Bobcats added a run in the fifth, the Racers broke the game open in the bottom half of the frame. Perritano sparked a four-run rally with an RBI double to left-center. Later in the inning, a fielder's choice by Mistone combined with a throwing error allowed two runs to score, and Cunningham capped the surge with an RBI groundout to make it 9-3.
Murray State sealed the victory with a final four-run outburst in the eighth. Airhart singled to score pinch-runner Jackson McCoy, followed by an RBI double from Perritano. Mistone capped his five-RBI day with a two-run single through the left side to secure the 13-4 final.
Box Score Notes: Third consecutive opening-day win for Murray State … Luke Mistone tied single-game career high RBI total … Most runs scored on opening day since 1982 (15-3 vs. UT Martin)
