Murray State women's basketball won 79-77 over UIC to improve to 13-1 in MVC play
Halli Poock scored a game-high 32 points to lead Murray State to a narrow 79-77 victory over UIC on Sunday afternoon at the CFSB Center.
The Racers (22-3, 13-1 MVC) appeared to take control early, outscoring the Flames 22-10 in the opening quarter. However, UIC battled back behind a balanced attack led by Jessica Carrothers, who finished with 21 points. The Flames erased the early deficit by outscoring Murray State 42-32 across the final two periods, but the Racers held on late to secure the win.
Poock was efficient throughout the contest, shooting 11-of-19 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Sharnecce Currie-Jelks recorded a double-double for Murray State, anchoring the interior with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Keslyn Secrist also contributed 12 points in the winning effort.
UIC's Amelia Strong provided a significant spark off the bench, scoring 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds. Julia Coleman added 17 points for the Flames, who shot 45.1% from the floor but struggled from deep, connecting on just 2-of-11 three-point attempts.
Murray State dominated from beyond the arc, hitting eight three-pointers compared to just two for UIC. The Racers also capitalized at the charity stripe, finishing 17-of-22.
