EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Free passes proved costly for the Murray State pitching staff as the Racers dropped the series opener to Evansville 10-6 on Thursday at German American Bank Field.

The Racer pitching staff tied a season high by hitting six Purple Aces batters while issuing eight walks. The loss, combined with wins by Indiana State and UIC on Thursday, officially eliminated Murray State from contention for the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title.

Murray State (29-25, 13-9 MVC) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning by taking advantage of three Evansville errors. However, the lead was short-lived. After the Purple Aces (20-29, 13-9 MVC) plated two runs in the bottom of the third, the Evansville lineup drew eight free passes in the bottom of the fourth, including seven consecutive walks.

Nic Schutte made his 30th career start and went 3 2/3 innings on the mound. He struggled to find the strike zone throughout the evening, allowing six runs on five walks and four hit batters. Schutte was charged with his sixth loss of the season.

Connor Chisolm led the Murray State lineup with a three-hit performance, highlighted by his team-leading fourth triple of the year. Chisolm drove in one run and scored twice while also drawing his 35th walk of the season.

Colby Ott and Kainen Jorge each tallied multi-hit games in the effort. Jorge finished the night with two singles, while Ott recorded a single and a double.

Murray State looks to bounce back Friday in the middle game of the final regular season series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the broadcast available on ESPN+.
