Racers Outshoot Georgia Southern but Fall 1-0 in First-Ever Meeting

MURRAY, Ky. - Murray State women's soccer put together its most productive attacking performance of the season but could not find the finish, falling 1-0 to Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon at Cutchin Field in the first meeting between the two programs.

The Racers (0-4-1, 0-0-0 MVC) took 14 shots, their highest total in a match this season, and put four on goal against a Georgia Southern side that improved to 4-0-2.

Murray State came out of the gate pressing, earning a corner kick in the fourth minute and Addison Howell fired the game's first shot moments later. Natalie Miller tested the Eagles in the 11th minute, and Erin O'Shea forced the afternoon's first save in the 19th. Murray State's best sequence of the half came in the 22nd minute, when Ava Wilson, Howell and Breece Bass all put attempts toward goal inside 11 seconds, the last of them drawing a save, before the Racers won another corner kick.

Georgia Southern broke through in the 26th minute, converting off an assist for what proved to be the only goal of the match.

Bass drew another save in the 32nd minute, Kate Stordy sent an attempt over the bar in the 34th, and Miller rattled the crossbar in the 39th in Murray State's closest look of the afternoon. The Racers took 10 of their 14 shots and all three of their corner kicks before halftime.

"We're close, just waiting for that breakthrough," head coach Ben Madsen said. "I thought we'd get one goal and I was hoping for a couple more after that. Obviously, it didn't happen, but we're close to having a breakthrough."

Bass led the Racers with four shots and two shots on goal, both single-game highs for Murray State this season. Miller matched the four-shot total and added one on target, while Howell finished with three attempts.

"We had a couple times where we took a few too many touches, couldn't get the ball off our foot," Madsen said. "It wasn't just Breece, we were in their box a lot, we have to have that last piece."

Murray State stayed in it after the break behind Griselda Revolorio, who turned away shots in the 73rd and 79th minutes to keep the deficit at one. The goalkeeper finished with two saves across 90 minutes. Miller forced a save in the 55th minute and put another attempt just wide in the 83rd minute as the Racers chased the equalizer.

Murray State hits the road for its next match, traveling to Marshall on Thursday, Sept. 3. Kickoff in Huntington, West Virginia, is set for 6 p.m. ET.
