Murray State Game Notes I Portland Game Notes I Froggy 103.7FM I Live Stats
The Murray State Racers play in a place that is very familiar to them when they participate in the first Challenge In Music City in Nashville, Tenn. (Nov. 28-30). The Racers will be joined at Municipal Auditorium by Drake, Portland and Valparaiso as each team will play three games in three days (Nov. 28-30) and fans will get to enjoy seeing six games total over the course of the weekend. The four teams represent some of the best conferences in the nation including: Drake (Missouri Valley), Murray State (Ohio Valley) Portland (West Coast) and Valparaiso (Horizon).
All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is back for his 24th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth will provide analysis. There is no video streaming available.
In the first four games of the season, the Racers have played some brilliant basketball most of the time in earning a 2-2 mark. MSU knocked off Middle Tennessee (Nov. 18) on the road and scored a tune-up win over Brescia (Nov. 20). Along the way, MSU played a close game in a 77-74 loss to Houston on opening night (Nov. 14) and struggled in a Monday loss in Cincinnati against a rising Xavier squad 89-62.
Cameron Payne and Jarvis Williams lead the Racers in the scoring department each with a little more than 18 points per game. They're first and second in the OVC. Payne, the OVC Preseason Player of the Year, has 19 assists and 16 steals in the first four games.
The Racers have played some good basketball in recent years in pre-conference tournaments. In 2011, the Racers used the championship of the Great Alaska Shootout to propell themselves into being the final undefeated team in the nation at 23-0. MSU has also had success in recent years with victories over the likes of Auburn, St. John's, San Francisco and Stanford.
The Racers will have the advantage of knowing the Muni well after playing there many seasons in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. MSU is 9-6 in the building having played 11 OVC tournaments and they've made trips to the NCAA Tournament in 1995, 2004 and 2012 after winning at the Muni. The combined men's and women's championship has been held at Municipal Auditorium nine times.
After playing the weekend in Nashville, the Racers return home next week to meet Bethel (Dec. 3) and Western Kentucky (Dec. 6). After this pair of games, the Racers have the week off to prepare and take final semester exams. MSU goes on the road again for a game at Evansville (Dec. 13).
