The Murray State softball team will play the final game of its non-conference schedule on Wednesday when it travels to the Bluff City to take on regional rival Memphis.
The Racers took two games from then OVC-leading SIU Edwardsville last weekend, 5-4 in 10 innings and 7-2. In game one, Murray State led 1-0 and 4-1 in the game, but each time the cougars answered in the very next inning, eventually sending the game to extras. After nearly three full additional innings, MSU finally broke the tie with sacrifice fly from Leslie Bridges to score Cayla Levins and win the game.
Game two belonged to the Racers from start to finish, as they began the game with seven unanswered runs. SIUE finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh, but it was not enough as MSU completed the sweep of the Cougars for the second consecutive year. The wins moved the Racers to just a half-game back of fourth-place Eastern Kentucky in the OVC standings, while the two losses dropped SIUE from first to third.
Alexa Becker had an outstanding series and was rewarded for her play by being named as the adidas® OVC Player of the Week. Becker finished the doubleheader at 4-for-7 with a .571 average. She finished the doubleheader with three runs, four RBIs, two walks, two home runs and went a perfect 3-for-3 on the base paths. She also posted a .667 on-base percentage and a whopping 1.429 slugging percentage.
In the game one, 10-inning win over the Cougars, Becker went 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBIs, two walks and two home runs. She followed that up with a 2-for-4 performance in game two, to go along with a run and a RBI. This was her first OVC honor of the season and third of her career.
This will be the fifth meeting all-time between Murray State and Memphis and the third at the Tiger Softball Complex. Murray State has never beaten Memphis, but has lost all four previous meetings by just one run each. In 2012, the Tigers took both games of a doubleheader in Memphis by a 1-0 score, then followed that up last season by winning two games in Murray by identical 5-4 scores.
Memphis is coming off a rough weekend in Tampa where it was swept in a three-game set by USF. The Tigers were shutout twice in the series and outscored 24-1 over the three-game set. Memphis was also limited to just one hit in each game, with Lindsay Braman coming up with two of them. Braman was also responsible for the Tigers' lone run and RBI in the series, as she went yard for a team-high fifth time this season in game one.
Lindsay Crowdus currently leads Memphis with a .348 average, while Brittany Vaughn and Georganna Goodwin follow at .299. Ellen Roberts is the current ace of the Tiger staff at 11-7 on the season with a team-low 2.68 ERA. She has limited opponents to a .267 average and has struck out a team-high 138 strikeouts.
Live stats will be available for the game, while a pay-per-view live video stream will also be available. Any changes to coverage or to Wednesday's schedule, along with all links, can be found at GoRacers.com.
