The Murray State softball team scored 11 unanswered runs to rally and top Nicholls State, 11-3, Sunday in the final game of the Samford Softball Classic at Samford Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
Nicholls State (6-4) jumped ahead early in the first, when Alexis Huss went yard with two runners on base to give her team the quick 3-0 lead. However, in the top of the next inning Shelbey Miller tied the game with one swing of the bat when she hit her first home run of the season to knot the game at three.
From that point, the Racers took control and never looked back. In the fourth, Taylor Odom tripled to lead off the frame and was brought home in the next at bat on a single from Mallory Young. Two batters later, Miller was at it again when she became the eighth player in MSU history to homer twice in the same game and give her team a 6-3 lead.
Defensively, Murray State was solid in the final four innings allowing just four base runners and turning their ninth and 10th double plays of the season. Offensively, the Racers went on to add five more runs in the bottom three innings and cruise to an 11-3 win.
Miller finished the day at 3-for-4 with a walk, four runs and five RBIS, with Alexa Becker also tallying three hits to go along with a run and a RBI. Odom, Young and Maggie Glass each came up with two hits in the contest, while Mo Ramsey, Jessica Twaddle and Jocelynn Rodgers each had four to give MSU a season-high 15 hits.
CheyAnne Gaskey improved to 2-1 on the year with three runs on seven hits with just two walks and three strikeouts over the full seven innings.
Next weekend, the Racers will travel to Conway, South Carolina for the Chanticleer Showdown with five games against Sacred Heart, Coastal Carolina, Boston College and Bucknell.
