The Murray State baseball team used a five-run first inning and a six-run sixth inning to roll its way to an 11-3 win over Alabama A&M Tuesday night at Reagan Field in a weather shortened game. The game was postponed due to lightning in the top of the seventh and was eventually called due to rain. Due to NCAA rules, the game reverts back to the sixth inning, the last completed inning of the contest.
Jack Hranec got the Racers (21-21) going early in the contest with a bases-clearing three-run double that hit off the right field wall in the bottom of the first inning that scored Adam Bauer, Tyler Dixon and Caleb Hicks. Kipp and Nick Moore then provided back-to-back RBI hits to lengthen the MSU advantage to 5-0.
The Bulldogs (12-34) did not go away quietly, however as they cut the lead to 5-1 in the second with a solo home run and then added two more runs in the third to make it 5-3.
The MSU offense was finally able to explode again though in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Hranec scored on an AAMU field error to make it 6-3. Two batters later, Aaron Bence was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded which scored Kipp Moore to make it 7-3. A Bauer two-RBI single through the right side in the next at-bat lengthened the Racers' advantage to 9-3. A Ramsey Scott sacrifice fly RBI and another RBI hit from Hranec made it 11-3.
Austin Dubsky got the start on the mound and the win as the game was determined as a split start prior to the beginning. Dubsky pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out two batters. Tyler Anderson, Brandon Hicks and Cody Maerz pitched in relief of Dubsky in the win. Maerz picked up his second save of the year as he entered the game in the sixth with a two-run lead for MSU.
Bauer, Hranec and Kipp Moore all went 2-for-3 with two runs scored on the night with Bauer and Hranec both collecting multiple RBIs. Bence was 1-for-3 at the dish with a run while Cody Hall scored once and drew two walks in his second start of the season.
MSU returns to action this weekend as the Racers travel to face first-place Southeast Missouri in a three-game series beginning Friday night at 6 p.m., weather permitting in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
