Racers Take Down Skyhawks
3/30/2018 9:03:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The Murray State women's tennis team hit the double-digit mark for wins as they defeated the Skyhawks of UT Martin 5-2 in Martin, Tennessee.
With the win, Murray State is now 10-6 overall, 4-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference and winners of their last six matches. UT Martin drops to 1-11 overall and 1-3 in the OVC.
"We knew today was going to be a tough day. UT Martin is a very well-coached team and they always show up with lots of energy, so it feels even better winning on the road against them," said head coach Jorge Caetano after the win.
"We were only able to practice twice this week because of the rain so we knew it was going to be hard to play our best tennis. The important thing is that this team keeps showing a lot of toughness when facing adversity, and I am very pleased and happy with the way we won the match today."
The Racers started off hot, winning two of three doubles matches to pick up the early first point. Jeanne Masson and Claire Chang won 6-4 in the first spot while Amina Hadzic and Anja Loncarevic won 6-3 in the second spot.
Chang won in the first spot in three sets, winning the first and third set 6-3 while dropping the second set 1-6. This was her fifth straight win and 17th of the year
Aarja Chakraborty came through with a two-set win, winning 6-2 and 6-4 for her sixth win of the year.
Hadzic kept her winning streak alive, moving it to 11 straight with a two-set victory. She won 6-3 and 6-2 for her 15th win of the year.
Anja Loncarevic won in two sets as well, winning 6-2 and 6-0 for her fifth win of the year.
Murray State is back in action tomorrow, as they take on the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri at 10 am in Paducah, Ky., at the McCracken High School Indoor Courts.
