Murray State baseball defeated UIC 6-4 in comeback fashion on Saturday
Murray State baseball earned the 6-4 win over UIC on Saturday in dramatic fashion at Johnny Reagan Field. Despite trailing 3-0 into the sixth inning, the Racers would take the victory thanks in part to the heroics of Riley Hawthorne.
Hawthorne led the Racers offense with three RBIs on the day, all of which were of the go-ahead variety. His first RBI gave the Racers a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap off a four-run inning for the Racers while his second and third RBIs came on a two out triple in the eighth to secure the win.Â
Drew Vogel had a strong performance with a hit and two-RBIs in the matchup while Dustin Mercer picked up a single and scored two runs. Seven different Racers picked up a hit on the day while scoring all of their runs across two innings in the sixth and the eighth.
Starting pitcher Bryce Valero shined once again, tossing 6.0 innings pitched with eight strikeouts and three runs (one earned). Valero now holds a 2.15 ERA to go with a team-high 48 strikeouts this season. Ethan Lyke picked up his first collegiate win in relief while allowing just one run across 2.0 innings pitched. Ben Krizen earned his third save of the season as he slammed the door shut in a scoreless ninth inning to help the Racers level the series with the Flames.Â
The rubber match of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Johnny Reagan Field.Â
