Racers Wrap Up Play At Austin Peay Fall Tournament
9/15/2024 7:22:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Murray State was the only team in the tournament to feature multiple freshmen.
The Racers completed their first tournament of the Fall 2024 season at the Austin Peay Invitational. Friday's and Saturday's matches were played at the Michael O. Buchanon Tennis Facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky and the final matches on Sunday were played at the Governors Tennis Courts in Clarksville, Tennessee.
"It was a great first tournament overall," head coach Jorge Caetano said. "We played our style of tennis and the girls did a fantastic job taking control of the points during their matches."
As a team, the Racers went 4-8 in all doubles matches and 15-10 in all singles matches. On the event's opening day on Friday, MSU saw a 4-0 sweep in doubles and an 7-0 sweep in singles against Cumberland. All eight Racers competing earned at least one doubles victory and one singles victory.
Due to Cumberland having one less player than Murray State, freshman Molly Null faced and defeated Austin Peay's Alice Bolton 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Sophomore Valeria Chaikovskaia saw a perfect 3-0 weekend at the No. 1 spot for the Racers. Newcomers Yuna Kadowaki, Bruna Melato, Yu Kikawa and sophomore Varya Alexeyeva each won at least two of their three singles matches in the tournament.
Murray State was just one of the four teams to feature multiple freshmen competing. The Racers saw four freshmen play compared to Cumberland's and Austin Peay's one freshman, and Western Kentucky carried no freshmen on their team.
"Being this early in the season we know that comes with a price which means we will make more mistakes and lose more matches early on," Caetano added. "But everyone has bought in and understands that it is part of the journey. We have a lot of work to do in doubles where we played a little tentatively but the talent is there so if we continue to work hard, the sky's the limit for this young group."
The Racers return to play when they travel to Conway, Arkansas for the Central Arkansas Invitational on Friday, September 20 and Saturday, September 21.
