Murray State hits three homers, score 19 runs in series opening win against Illinois State

The Murray State Baseball team (15-6, 2-2 MVC), defeated Illinois State, (10-14, 2-2 MVC), 19-8 in Friday's series opener in Normal, Illinois.

With a fifth inning single, Dustin Mercer recorded hit number 200 in his career at Murray State. He later added an RBI single in the seventh to give him 100 RBIs at Murray State.

The Racers erased an early three run deficit with a 10 run fourth inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Conner Cunningham. Carson Garner and Jackson McCoy also went deep for the Racers in Friday's game.

Jonathan Hogart went 3-3 with three doubles and Dom Decker added a pair of doubles of his own to go along with a single to give him a three-hit game.

Murray State moves to 11-8 all time against Illinois State. The Racers will return to action tomorrow, and will now play a doubleheader Saturday to wrap up the series. Game one will now begin at 1 p.m.

Dustin Mercer also extended his on-base streak to 21 games and his hitting streak to 13 games.
With his fourth inning home run Carson Garner moved ahead of Wes Cunningham and is now alone in sixth place in Racers history with 36 career home runs.
Four Racers: Dom Decker, Carson Garner, Jonathan Hogart and Dustin Mercer collected three hits in the ball game.
Dan Tauken drew three walks in Friday's game and has now reached base safely in his last 10 games.
Will Vierling extended his on base streak to 18 games.
Murray State is now 9-1 in games this season where they score at least 10 runs.
