Murray State Defeats UIC 6-3

The Murray State Racers (13-21, 4-10 MVC) defeated the UIC Flames (4-33, 0-12 MVC) 6-3 on Saturday afternoon in Chicago, Ill. to clinch a series win

This is the Racers' first Missouri Valley Conference series win of the season as the Racers remain tenth in the MVC standings. Meanwhile, the Flames continue to search for their first MVC win of the season as they sit last in the conference.

Murray State outhit its opponent 8-6 and UIC committed the only two errors of the afternoon.

The first three innings were a pitching duel, with Bre Haislip and Alyssa McIntosh trading blows from the circle. The Racers got hot in the fourth as Kenley Minor got the scoring started by scoring Courtney Sandy on a single to right center. After stealing second, Minor touched home on the next at-bat after Ailey Schyck singled to right field. Parker Holcombe sent Schyck home and ended McIntosh's day with a deep double down the left-field line and put the Racers up 4-0 when Riley Jestadt singled to center field.

Holcombe added to the lead in the sixth with her first home run of the season, a deep shot to right field. Bailey Broemmer put the Racers up 6-0 when she scored on an error.

Emma Gumont gave the Flames life with a three-run shot in the bottom of the sixth, however, they were unable to add a run in the seventh as the Racers won 6-3.

Bre Haislip (5-10) went the distance and got the win, giving up three hits, three earned runs, and a pair of walks while striking out three.

Parker Holcombe put together an outstanding day at the plate, going 2-3 with 2 RBI, a double, and a home run. Katy Huels, Hannah Sutton, Kenley Minor, Ailey Schyck, Riley Jestadt, and Bailey Broemmer had one hit each. Huels pushed her hit streak all the way to ten games, going 1-4 at the plate with a double.

Alyssa McIntosh (2-14) took the loss in the circle, allowing five hits and four earned runs. Emma Gumont led the Flames at the plate with a pair of hits, including her 3 RBI home run.

The Racers and Flames will wrap up the series on Sunday, April 6 at 12:00 p.m. CT at Flames Field.
