Murray State falls despite outhitting UIC.
The Murray State Racers (13-22, 4-11 MVC) fell to the UIC Flames (5-33, 1-12 MVC) 5-1 in their series finale on Sunday in Chicago, Ill.
Despite the loss, Murray State remains ahead of Evansville in the Missouri Valley Conference standings, in tenth, while the Flames remain in 12th despite snapping a 29-game losing streak.
The Flames scored their first run in the second inning on a Larissa Ortiz home run and added two more in the third on another homer by Hailey Cowing. The Flames made it 5-0 in the fifth with another pair of runs before Katy Huels put the Racers on the board. The Freshman extended her hit streak to 11 games with a solo home run to right field that scored the Racers' only run of the afternoon. Â
Ailey Schyck led the Racers at the plate, going 3-3 on the day with a trio of singles. Huels, Erin Lackey, Courtney Sandy, Parker Holcombe, Riley Jestadt, and Bailey Broemmer each had one hit on the day. The Racers out-hit the Flames 9-7 but were charged with the only error of the contest. Â
Karlye Graber (4-7) took the loss in the circle after pitching two and two-thirds allowing three hits and three earned runs, and striking out four. Raylee Roby allowed four hits and one earned run and struck out one in three and a third in relief of Graber. Â
Alyssa McIntosh (3-14) got the win in the circle while Larissa Ortiz and Hailey Cowing led the way at the plate with a pair of RBI each. Â
The Racers are back in action on Tuesday, April 8 for a midweek game in Clarksville, Tenn. against Austin Peay at 3 p.m. CT. Following the midweek contest, Murray State will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa for a series at UNI April 11-13. Â
