Racers Run Past Jayhawks
3/15/2016 7:52:00 PM | Baseball
After MSU (8-10) scored one run in the top of the first on a Caleb Hicks double to left field, the Jayhawks (6-8) got two runs in the bottom half of the inning before the lightening and rain rolled in and caused the stoppage with two outs in the inning. Racer starter Austin Dubsky was able to get a bases-loaded strikeout to end the threat and the inning after the two teams returned to the field.
In the second inning, that's when the Racers went to work, scoring five runs in the second, four in the fourth and three in the sixth on their way to a victory to open the two-game set with KU.
Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Nick Moore and Jaron Robinson started the scoring in the second for MSU and put the Racers up 3-2. The Racers then followed that up with back-to-back home runs, the first, a two-run shot from Tyler Lawrence and then a solo shot the next batter in Ramsey Scott to make it 6-2. Those blasts were both the fifth of the season for Lawrence and Scott.
Adam Bauer singled up the middle in the fourth inning to push the lead to 7-2, Lawrence next scored Bauer on a triple to center field, followed by Lawrence scoring on an error and Tyler Dixon scoring on another sac fly to make it 10-2 MSU.
Hicks and Cody Gilbert tallied RBI hits in the sixth, while Kipp Moore scored on a wild pitch in the inning to push the Racer's advantage to 13-2. After the Jayhawks scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 13-6, Lawrence got a run back in the ninth with his fourth RBI of the contest to make it 14-6. KU also added three runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Lawrence led the way offensively for the Racers going 4-for-5 for the day with three runs scored. Lawrence was also a single shy of the cycle in the win. Bauer, Gilbert, Hicks and Moore all had two hits each for MSU in the game with Bauer scoring three runs. Scott also scored multiple runs on the night.
Dubsky got his first career win in the game as he pitched 6.1 innings, allowing six runs, three of them earned, on seven hits while recording a pair of strikeouts. Tyler Anderson and Brad Boegel combined to pitch 2.2 innings of relief.
The Racers and Jayhawks will conclude their two-game dip Wednesday at 3 p.m.
