Racers Falter Against UAB and Samford
3/10/2018 10:49:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The Murray State women's tennis team was unable to secure a win in Birmingham, Ala., this weekend as they fell to UAB and Samford Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10.
Against UAB, Murray State lost 4-0, with three of the six singles matches unable to be finished. The Racers saw Claire Chang and Jeanne Masson post a 6-3 result in their first doubles match together this season.
"We changed our doubles line up without having much practice, and I saw a lot of positives. We're looking forward to getting back on the courts Monday and start working hard to prepare to play at home next weekend.," said head coach Jorge Caetano after the weekend results.
Against Samford, Murray State was defeated 6-1, with Amina Hadzic picking the lone win, winning 6-4 in two sets.
"We knew it was going to be a tough weekend playing against two good teams on the road. Both UAB and Samford have beat all of the OVC opponents they've faced this year, and I am pleased with the way the girls competed against them," commented Caetano.
Two matches were pushed to a third set against the Bulldogs, with Stasya Sharapova and Anja Loncarevic losing in close matches. Sharapova won her first set 6-4 before losing two close sets of 6-4 and 7-6. Loncarevic won her first set 6-3 before going down 6-2 in the next two sets.
Although losing in two sets at Samford, Chang held her opponent close, losing 7-6 and 6-4.
Murray State plays their first two home matches this coming weekend, with Belmont and Tennessee State coming to town on Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17.
