Racers Start Conference Play With Convincing Win Against Belmont
3/15/2018 7:35:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The Murray State women's tennis team took to the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts as they started conference play Thursday with a win against Belmont University, winning 6-1 in Murray, Ky.
Murray State moves to 5-6 on the year and 1-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference while Belmont drops to 4-9 and 0-1 in the OVC.
"Belmont is a very young and talented team, and I am very happy with the win today. We fell a little short in doubles but the girls began singles play very focused on getting the job done and that's what they did. We played smart, and I liked the way everyone played in the toughest moments of the match. We showed a lot of heart and maturity today in every single position of the line up so I am pleased with that. It is very important to start conference with a good win and we are looking forward to hosting Tennessee State on Saturday," said head coach Jorge Caetano after the win.
The Racers started off losing two of three in doubles, with Sara Bjork and Stasya Sharapova picking up the lone doubles win 6-1.
Murray State would then go on to sweep singles play, with every match only going two sets.
Claire Chang is now 6-3 in her last 10 matches, and 13-6 on the year as she won 6-2 and 6-1.
Sharapova picked up her fourth win of the year as she won 6-2 and 6-1 in the second slot.
Aarja Chakraborty picked up her second win of the year, winning 6-2 and 6-1.
Amina Hadzic won her sixth straight game, moving to 10-5 on the year with a two-set win of 6-0 and 6-2.
Anja Loncarevic sits at 3-2 on the year with her 6-2, 6-3 win against Belmont
Jeanne Masson won her eighth match of the year, as she won 7-5 and 6-4.
Murray State continues OVC play Saturday, March 17 as they host Tennessee State next.
