Racers Fall in Grand Forks

Murray State fell in the MVFC opener to top 10 ranked North Dakota
After falling behind 3-0, the Racers offense started hot scoring a touchdown on their first drive thanks to a Jayden Johannsen's 58-yard burst.
After swapping blows with the Fighting Hawks, the Racers scored again on a chunk play coming in the form of a 65-yard scamper from Q'Darryius Jennings. The rush from Jennings marks the Racers longest touchdown run since 2016 and it gave the Racers a 14-10 lead with 7:05 remaining in the first quarter.
Jawaun Northington capped the first half scoring for MSU on a one -ard run for his third touchdown rush of the season.Â
Murray State tacked on two more touchdown's in the second half in the way of another Jennings rush from three yards out and Jameson Holcomb and Marcus Floyd Jr. connected for a 17 yard strike in the fourth quarter.
The Racers now turn their attention to another top-10 ranked opponent in South Dakota as they return to Roy Stewart Stadium for a 1 p.m. kick at on a Navy Out day (Oct. 5).
Game Notes
- Jayden Johannsen, Dareon Goodrum, Jayson Coley, and Justice Cross served as the captains for the game.
- The game marked the northernmost football game played in Murray State's 100-year history.
- The previous game played in the farthest reaches in the north was last season in Fargo against North Dakota State, which is about 75 miles to the south of Grand Forks.
- The Racers ran for 268 yards against UND, a new season high and the most since and the most since 2022 vs. Lindenwood when they rushed for 292 yards.
- Jennings' 65-yard touchdown run was the longest for the Racers scoring run since 2023 when Cortezz Jones had a 69-yard run at Middle Tennessee.
- His run is tied for the 22nd-longest in MSU history.
- MSU's longest run remains 97 yards by Carl Walker in 1954 and matched in 2005 by Stevie Chaney. Both runs came in Murray against Austin Peay.
- Tyson Meiguez led the Racers defense with seven tackles, including four solo stops.
- Meiguez becomes the first Racer to reach 30 tackles on the season and is averaging 7.5 tackles per game.
- Six different MSU players had at least 5 tackles.
- This was Murray State's first trip to Grand Forks as they play their second season in the MVFC.
- Saturday's game with the South Dakota marks the Coyotes first visit to Murray.
